Occupancy is sprinklered
Automatic fire alarm system: common areas notification appliances activated by sprinkler waterflow switch.
Occupancy is NOT sprinklered
Manual fire alarm system: pull stations at all exits, every level staircase and elevator lobby; common areas notification appliances activated by any pull station.
907.2.1 Group A. A manual fire alarm system that
activates the occupant notification system in accordance
with Section 907.5 shall be installed in Group A occupancies
where the occupant load due to the assembly occupancy
is 300 or more. Group A occupancies not separated
from one another in accordance with Section 707.3.9 shall
be considered as a single occupancy for the purposes of
applying this section. Portions of Group E occupancies
occupied for assembly purposes with an occupant load of
less than 1,000
, shall be provided with a fire alarm system
as required for the Group E occupancy.

Exception: Manual fire alarm boxes are not required
where the building is equipped throughout with an
automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with
Section 903.3.1.1 and the occupant notification appliances
will activate throughout the notification zones
upon sprinkler waterflow.

Every Group A building used for educational purposes
shall be provided with a manual or automatic fire
alarm system. This provision shall apply to, but shall
not necessarily be limited to, every community college
and university.

Exception: Privately owned trade or vocational
schools or any firm or company which provides educational
facilities and instructions for its employees.

Occupant load is 1,000 but less than 10,000
Emergency voice/alarm communication system shall be provided.
907.2.1.1 System initiation in Group A occupancies
with an occupant load of 1,000 or more.
Activation
of the fire alarm in Group A occupancies with an
occupant load of 1,000 or more shall initiate a signal
using an emergency voice/alarm communications system
in accordance with Section 907.5.2.2. Group A
occupancies with an occupant load of 10,000 or more,
see Section 907.2.1.3.


Exception: Where approved, the prerecorded
announcement is allowed to be manually deactivated
for a period of time, not to exceed 3 minutes, for the
sole purpose of allowing a live voice announcement
from an approved, constantly attended location.

Occupant load is 10,000 or more
Public address (Mass notification) system shall be provided.
907.2.1.3 Public address system. Pursuant to Health
and Safety Code Section 13108.9, for all buildings or
structures constructed on or after July 1, 1991, which
are intended for public assemblies of 10,000 or more
persons a public address system with an emergency
backup power system shall be required.

Portions of Group E occupancies within Group A
Any areas with an occupant load less than 1,000 used for educational purposes
shall be provided with a fire alarm system as required for the Group E occupancy.
